Originally, the band’s lead vocalist was a Stocksbridge High student called Glyn Jones - Alex was too shy to sing at first.

Arctic Monkey’s first ever gig was played on the 13 th of June 2003 at a pub called The Grapes in Sheffield’s city centre.

The first gig that Alex Turner attended was to see The Vines perform in Manchester; he says he was particularly inspired by their frontman Craig Nicholls.

Lauren Socha, the girl who played Nina in Scummy Man (the band’s short film) later went on to star as Kelly Bailey in E4’s Misfits.

In 2008, former bassist Andy Nicholson opened a pub in Sheffield called ‘The Bowery’. Matt said that he would love to follow suit with one of his own which he’d call ‘The Cautious Horse’.

Initially, the band’s sales in the US did not reflect the success they had had in the UK; and American critics even suggested that the interest in Arctic Monkeys was ‘yet another example of the UK’s press over-hyping new bands’.

Despite this however, the band was declared Best New Artist in the United States in the 2007 PLUG Independent music awards.

Alex has said that his favourite album of all time is Rubber Soul by The Beatles.

The band’s 2006 tour which featured twelve dates sold out in under an hour.

Hilariously, in 2011 - after five years of huge success, Alex said this in an interview when asked about his vocals “I am still working on it but I think we are getting there with the singing thing.”
